Canon EOS R6 Mark III Unveiled: 40FPS Shooting Meets 7K Video Power

Canon have announced the much anticipated EOS R6 Mark III, mirrorless digital camera. The EOS R6 Mark III arrives as a serious contender for hybrid shooters demanding both speed and resolution. Packing a 32.5MP full-frame sensor with 40FPS burst capability, internal 7K raw recording, and cinema-grade autofocus algorithms, this camera bridges the gap between enthusiast and professional workflows. Notable additions include pre-capture buffers for stills and video, registered face priority AF, and open gate recording … firsts for the R6 line. Whether tracking wildlife at 40fps or shooting 4K at 120FPS with audio, the R6 Mark III positions itself as Canon’s most versatile hybrid body yet.

R6 Mk III Sensor and Performance

The R6 Mark III features a 32.5-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor – a 34% increase in pixel count over the R6 Mark II. Despite not being a stacked sensor, readout speeds exceed its predecessor while maintaining excellent rolling shutter control. The camera achieves up to 40 frames per second with electronic shutter, maintaining this speed without sacrificing image quality or AF performance.

Enhanced in-body image stabilization provides additional insurance for sharp handheld shots in challenging lighting conditions.

Pre-Recording Capabilities

Two pre-capture features address the challenge of missing critical moments:

Pre-Continuous Recording captures up to 20 frames at 40FPS (RAW or JPEG) before full shutter press. The buffer runs continuously, storing frames that can be saved retroactively.

Video Pre-Recording captures 3-5 seconds before the record button is pressed. Both features are valuable for unpredictable subjects in wildlife, nature, and sports photography.

Autofocus Advancements

Subject detection AF covers people, animals (including birds), and vehicles, and is functional even at 40FPS. Tracking has been refined beyond the R6 Mark II with more tenacious lock-on for fast-moving subjects.

Video autofocus borrows algorithms from Canon’s EOS C80 and C400 cinema cameras, delivering smoother focus transitions at the start and end of AF pulls for professional-looking footage.

Registered People Priority

Inherited from the EOS R1 and R5 Mark II, this feature allows registering up to 10 faces in-camera. Once registered, the AF system automatically prioritizes these individuals when detected in frame, and works even in crowds. Priority order can be customized, making it useful for events, news coverage, and sports where specific subjects need consistent focus priority.

R6 Mark III Video Capabilities

Internal recording capabilities include 7K RAW video at up to 60FPS to CFexpress Type B card, 7K ProRes RAW via HDMI to compatible external recorders, 4K at up to 120FPS with audio, and 2K/Full HD at up to 180FPS with audio. A dedicated slow/fast motion mode provides extensive speed combinations (see tech specs below for detailed options).

Open Gate Recording

The R6 Mark III introduces open gate recording to Canon’s EOS mirrorless lineup. Open gate recording refers to using the entire 32.5MP sensor area. This enables 7K high-resolution recording (RAW or MP4) and provides flexibility for creative cropping in post-production, particularly for vertical or square social media formats.

Canon Log2 and Log3 are available for both RAW and MP4 recording. Extensive custom picture options in the camera’s menus allow detailed color and look customization.

Fine recording options deliver oversampled 4K for enhanced sharpness and detail.

Build and Connectivity

The camera maintains Canon’s ergonomic design philosophy with intuitive button placement and grip comfort. The optional BG-R24 battery grip is compatible for extended shooting sessions.

Dual card slots include CFexpress Type B support, enabling faster burst rates and robust video recording capabilities including internal RAW video. Complete memory card specifications and compatibility details are listed below.

Video-focused improvements include a full-sized HDMI port (upgraded from micro HDMI), waveform monitors, and advanced auto white balance controls.

Target Users

The R6 Mark III addresses multiple shooting scenarios: wildlife and action photography requiring high burst rates, studio work benefiting from increased resolution, and video productions demanding cinema-quality footage. The combination of 40FPS stills capability with 7K video recording positions it for creators working across both mediums without compromise.

The camera targets serious enthusiasts, working professionals, and dedicated video users requiring pro-level features without stepping up to flagship pricing.
