Apple’s Custom Silicon Processor/SOC
Apple’s roll-out of their ARM-based custom silicon processors has recently expanded to their desktop iMac computers and is expected to come to their 16″ MacBook Pro and iMac Pro lineup.
As more M1-based devices come into use, one can only expect to see more professional photographers need native M1 apps for optimal performance.
Capture One – Complete Rewrite
The Capture One R&D team gave this new platform the respect it deserves.
By undertaking what Capture One calls a ‘complete rewrite’ of their image processing engine, they have optimized it to get the most out of the new Apple silicon architecture.
Speed Enhancements
Running Capture One 21 on an M1-powered Mac will speed up various functions.
Hopefully, this brings the barrier down between your work, the wait for processing to complete, and your creative vision.
Here’s what you can expect to be speeded up, and by how much, according to Capture One:
- up to 2X faster Image Import
- up to 2X edits with tools like Crop, Rotate, etc.
- 50% boost to managing assets in Catalogs and Albums
- Smoother brush edits with styles.
So, what does this mean for existing Capture One 21 users who are on M1-powered Macs? As mentioned, they can expect speed enhancements from just updating to this new M1-specific build. They can also expect greater stability and fewer issues related to reliability.
